The Calcutta Land Revenue Act, 1850 empowers the Collector of Kolkata to collect land revenue for the original jurisdiction of Calcutta High Court.
Under Section 4 of the Land Registration Act, 1876 Collector of every District including Collector of Kolkata was directed to prepare and to keep up a set of registers depicting the details of revenue paying and revenue-free lands of this District. Collector of Kolkata is the custodian of these much valuable registers for the original jurisdiction of Calcutta High Court, namely:
Register A: A General Register of revenue-paying lands.
Register B: A General Register of revenue-free lands.
Register C: A Mauzawari register of all lands, revenue-paying and revenue-free.
Register D: An Intermediate Register of Changes affecting entries in the General and Mauzawari registers.
The Collector of Kolkata, Stamp & Revenue is the custodian of the Record Room of Kolkata Collectorate. In the record room of Kolkata Collectorate there are huge numbers of valuable records having archival values. We can find documents relating to:
- Compilation of old “Pattah” documents of individual land plots of Kolkata District in Book format since 19th Century.
- Compilation of old “Kobuliyat” documents of individual land plots of Kolkata District in Book Format since 19th Century.
- Sets of Register “D” having the details of intermediate mutation process of revenue-paying and revenue-free land plots of Kolkata District from late 19th century to the middle of 20th century.
- Sets of general registers which are compilation of the details of revenue free land (Lakheraj) plots of Kolkata District in register format since 19th century.
- Title leaf including order sheets of the mutation of land plots under Kolkata District from late 19th century to the middle of 20th century.
- Plot wise maps of different block and sections of Kolkata District prepared in late 19th century.
